Just as we take care of our physical health with small daily habits, our digital lives need the same kind of routine care. Cyber hygiene is a set of simple, repeatable habits that protect us from scams and data theft, and none of them require technical expertise.
Keep your devices updated. Updates often fix security gaps before criminals can exploit them, so turn on automatic updates where you can.
Use strong, unique passwords. A different password for each important account means one breach does not put everything else at risk.
Be cautious with links and attachments. Unexpected messages asking you to click something urgently are a common scam tactic, so pause and verify the sender first.
Check website addresses carefully. Fake sites often look almost identical to real ones, so double check the address before entering personal information.
Back up your important files. Regular backups mean a lost device or a bad click does not mean losing everything.
Ask for help when something feels off. If a message or website seems suspicious, checking with a trusted family member or an expert is always a good instinct. Through the Mitigating Cyber Threats (MCT) project, we support older adults in building exactly these kinds of practical digital skills, so the internet can be a useful, enjoyable, and secure place for everyone.
